Historical Fiction / Nonfiction Book Project
Description:
You will be responsible for reading one historical fiction novel or nonfiction narrative text (125+ pages) set in a specific period of history. This book should be one that is appropriate for grades K-6th and that you have not read before this class. After reading the book, you will create one visual component and then choose 2 different ways to respond to the book. On the due date, you will share orally about your book and share whichever options you chose from below.

After reading the book, you will create one visual component and then choose 2 different ways to respond to the book. On the due date, you will share orally about your book and share whichever options you chose from below.
- 1) Sign up for a novel, so we do not have duplicates. I want you to be exposed to as many historical fiction/NF texts as you can.
- 2) Make a copy of the scoring guide. Add your name to the beginning of the title (e.g., FoxJennifer) and move to your shared Google folder. Return to this document to fill out the highlighted yellow sections with your choices, links, book title, author, and historical period.
- 3) Read the book (look for your favorite part or quote to complete #4 below).
- 4) Choose ONE of the following ***visual components: (See specific directions below)
- ***a) Create a #BookSnap to go with your book, OR
- ***b) Choose a favorite quote from your book and create an image that reflects the meaning of the quote (and the quote itself).
- 5) Choose 2 of the following ###Options: (One of these options you choose MUST have a technology component)
- ###a) Create an art piece to reflect events in your book, a character, and/or time period of the story,
- ###b) Create an online or physical timeline that reflects significant events in your book,
- ###c) Create a Google My Map that reflects movements and events in your book,
- ###d) Write an online book review, or
- ###e) Create a book trailer to go with your book.
***Choose ONE Visual component:
***1) Create a #BookSnap (See my example to the right)
|
***2) Favorite Quote Image (See my example to the right)
|
###Option Components
For your project, you will CHOOSE ANY 2 of the following options. Remember at least ONE of your choices needs to include a technology component!
|
- ###Option #2 - Online or physical timeline (I suggest Sutori for online timeline, but you can check this link out for more options.)
- Must include at least 5 significant events in your book in order.
- For EACH event, include a description AND a picture - these should represent what happened in the book in chronological order.
- Copy and paste the link on the spreadsheet or if you chose the physical timeline, write that in the spreadsheet as well.
|
|
- ###Option #4 - Online book review
- Choose Amazon or Goodreads to write your review.
- Your review MUST contain all of the following:
- Book title and author
- Grade level recommendation (for students to read themselves or as a read aloud - Please specify)
- Summary of the plot that doesn't give away too much
- Comments on the book's strengths and weaknesses (Did it give too much information in some places? And not enough in others? Was it overly graphic? Did it move too slowly? Did it give great opportunities for reflection? Be specific.)
- Your personal response to the book with specific examples to support praise or criticism.
- Copy and paste the link to your online review on this spreadsheet.
- ###Option #5 - Book Trailer
- What are book trailers? These are like movie trailers, but for books!
- Explore these to get a good idea of what a book trailer looks like.
- Here's how to make a book trailer.
- Here are some ideas for what platform/tools to use.
- If you want to choose this option, but need more help, please let me know!
- Your book trailer should be at least 30 seconds and no more than 2 minutes long.
- Copy and paste the link to your video on this spreadsheet.

- 1) Make sure all required items are in your shared Google folder:
- Copy of the scoring guide with all required information filled out---your name, choices, and other needed information that is highlighted in yellow.
- Scanned digital version of your art piece (if you chose this option).
- Google My Maps (if you chose this option) - This is an actual file that you can move around, just like Docs/Slides.
- 2) Bring your art piece and/or timeline piece (if you chose these options) to share with the class.
- 3) Be ready to share:
- Summary of your book (can be shared through an ###option component if you'd like),
- Connection to your time period - How did the content of the book support students' learning about this period in history?
- Your opinion of the book with evidence (If you liked it, why? If you didn't like it, why?),
- #BookSnap OR Favorite quote image,
- One of your ###option components,
- Grade level recommendation, and
- How you would use it with students.
