Each week, you will come to this website to access and explore resources and then reflect on them before coming to class. Each week will be set up with things to do before class, and I will also post any resources we will be using during class on here as well. I suggest you bookmark this site, so you can get here easily each week.

Week 1: Class Orientation and Lesson Plan Low-Down
You will attend Junior Block both days (Tuesday and Thursday) of this week.

Session 2: SS and Integrated Instruction
Before Class:
1) Explore resources (As you explore, take notes in order to write your journal response as noted below):

- a) Read Ch. 1 - Social Studies and Integrated Instruction: A Look at Social Studies
- Focus on the sections related to integrated instruction, the 6 areas of social sciences, and the examples of classroom activities and children’s literature.
- b) Skim Ch. 2 - A Look at Interdisciplinary Instruction
- Look at the Interdisciplinary Literature Units on pp. 69-71, 75 and the other projects throughout Ch. 2. These show how all content areas can be integrated to impact SS learning. Be ready to think about doing this in your own classroom!
- c) Read about Integrating Social Studies into Literacy Routines on this teacher's blog. This is a great, short read with lots of classroom application ideas.
- d) Read NCSS’s position statement on Powerful, Purposeful Pedagogy in Elementary Social Studies through Letter “E. Active.”
2) Write Journal Response #1 - SS & Integrated Instruction - Due by Monday midnight before Session 2.
- Go to the Journal Responses project description page and follow directions to get started. This includes creating a Google folder, sharing it with me, and other things to get this all set up for this semester. Please follow it closely.

Week 3: Standards and Lesson Plans
Before Class:
1) Explore the Missouri Learning Standards (MLS) for the Social Sciences.

- Get an overall view of how the standards are structured.
- Pay close attention to the standards for the grade level which you are assigned to for your field experience this semester.
During Class:
1) Current Events #1, #2 present in class
2) Class slides (below left)
3) Collaborative Activities (below right)
4) Evaluate lesson plans.
5) Discuss Lesson Plan and Reflection.
6) Discuss lesson plan meeting with Dr. Fox and sign up for a time ASAP to meet before the week of midterms. This meeting (explained on the Lesson Plan description page on #3 Meet with Dr. Fox) counts as your Midterm Exam grade.
7) ***Grad proposal due by Friday.*** (only for students taking this course for graduate credit)

Week 4: Multicultural and Bilingual Education
Before Class:

- a) Ch. 4 - Multicultural and Bilingual Education
- Read pp. 119-123 thoroughly;
- Skim pp. 123-138;
- Read pp. 139-151 thoroughly;
- Skim pp. 151-158, paying close attention to the bulleted activities and lessons.
- b) Read about the pros and cons of multicultural education. Do you agree with these pros and cons? ###Optional: There are 2 videos embedded in this post. The first one is long (almost 15 minutes), but it's a VERY interesting take on this topic. Check it out if you want an even different perspective.
- c) Read about some of the suggestions about working with English Language Learners from Justin Minkel in Education Week Teacher here. (Sorry about the wine reference in this article. I don't agree with it, but the other content in the article was too good not to share. So please disregard that section.)
- d) Choose one of the 2 videos below to watch about culture and multicultural education. Think about the points with which you agree and which you do not.

- Write this journal response on the same document as your other journal responses.
- Title - Journal Response #2 - Multicultural and Bilingual Education
- Choose at least 3 of the most important aspects/ideas of the readings/resources you explored.
- Describe why they are important, your personal reactions, and how they will impact you as a teacher. (This shows your ability to evaluate the readings and connect them to yourself now and in the future in your own classroom.)
- Include at least 2 questions you had while reading. This shows that you are an active, engaged reader and learner.
- ####Don't forget, you have response options described on the Journal Response page.
During Class:
