- a) Ch. 9 - History: Connecting to the Past
- Read pp. 363-372 thoroughly;
- Skim pp. 372-394; Make sure you understand the bolded words in the context of social studies instruction. Also pay attention to the children’s literature referenced throughout this section.
- b) Choose 2 of the resources below to explore:
- Smithsonian Institute website - For Educators, For Kids - Look around on these Smithsonian pages and find some activities and resources to help teach history in the elementary grades. Keep the Missouri Learning Standards in mind.
- National Endowment for the Humanities website - There are so many great resources, lesson plans, images, and ideas available. You can search by grade level and specific people group or content area. Check it out!
- TeachingHistory.org - This website has LOTS of resources....just pick a couple to explore and talk about.
- PBS LearningMedia - There are videos, interactive media, lesson plans, TV shows, etc. that you can use with your students.
2) Write Journal Response #3 - History - Due by Monday midnight before Session 5.
- Write this journal response on the same document as your other journal responses.
- Title - Journal Response #3 - History
- Choose at least 3 of the most important aspects/ideas of the readings/resources you explored.
- Describe why they are important, your personal reactions, and how they will impact you as a teacher.
- Include at least 2 questions you had while reading.

During Class:

Week 6: Historical Fiction / NF Book Project Presentations
Before Class:
1) Make sure all components of your Historical Fiction / Nonfiction Book Project Presentations are ready to go!
1) Everyone will present Historical Fiction/NF Book Projects.
2) Check the project description page for this project to prepare for the presentation part.
3) Discuss SS Minilessons assignment.
4) Mystery Box model presentation (by Dr. Fox).
5) Sign up for Mystery Box Assignment.

- Return to the scoring guide to fill out all the needed information BEFORE presenting.

Week 7: Children's Literature in SS
Before Class:

- a) Read Chapter 10 - Another Time, Another Place: Bringing SS to Life Through Literature
- Read/skim through the entire chapter, paying attention to the suggestions for children’s literature, literature response activities, and the thematic units.
- b) Look at some of the Notable Trade Books for Social Studies suggested by the NCSS. (For the current year, you have to be a member to see the list, but for prior years, even non-members can view the list.)
2) Write Journal Response #4 - SS & Children's Literature - Due by Monday midnight before Session 7.
- Write this journal response on the same document as your other journal responses.

- By Friday, Oct. 9, at noon, you should have written your lesson plan rough draft and had an individual meeting with Dr. Fox to discuss your lesson plan direction. This rough draft and meeting count as your Midterm Exam.
- We will not be having an in-class session this week.
